Branches charity cycle darts past £1,000 mark

Cycle

Newbury Building Society’s Abingdon and Didcot branches near the end of their gruelling 874-mile virtual cycle rides, with more than £1000 already raised for Helen & Douglas House.

On Monday 6 February, Newbury Building Society’s Abingdon and Didcot branches each began the ultimate two-wheeled indoor challenge – a static cycle from John O’Groats in the far north of Scotland to Land’s End, Britain’s most south-westerly point, raising money for Helen & Douglas House.

Each branch aimed to cover 874 miles on static cycles – supplied by Anytime Fitness and The Park Club Milton, both in Abingdon – which have stayed in branch for the duration of the challenge. Members of staff have been taking it in turn to ride, aiming to complete the king of bike rides in just fifteen days (ending on Friday 24th).

At the time of print, monies raised have topped £1,000, with donations still coming in. The money will support their chosen charity, Helen & Douglas House (Registered Charity Number: 1085951), based in Oxfordshire.

Sonja Roostan, Office Manager for Abingdon and Didcot, said: “It’s been a tough challenge for both branches, combining work duties with sixty miles on the static cycle every day, but great fun. Donations have exceeded our expectations and will go some way to support Helen & Douglas House, whose vision is to enable young people with life-shortening conditions to live as well and as fully as possible.”

If you would like to recognise this amazing achievement there are still ways to donate. You can donate in branch, online here or by text. To donate by text, you can pick up your phone and text NEWB71, followed by ‘£’ and the amount to 70070 (e.g. NEWB71 £2).
