It's win-win for Society on netball debut

Newbury Building Society’s Basingstoke branch hosted its first ever netball tournament on Wednesday 8 July 2015 at Everest Academy. Local companies were invited to take part in the tournament, competing against two teams from the Society made up of branch and Head Office staff.

Battling for supremacy on a breezy evening were contenders Carter Jonas, AXA Wealth/Proteus Theatre, Phillips Solicitors, Michael Usher Mortgages, Contractor Financials, Brain Chase Coles Solicitors and Lamb Brooks Solicitors. Despite some well-contested matches in the group stage it was the two teams from the Society who dominated, reaching the semi-finals to face Contractor Financials and Carter Jonas.

The two Society teams triumphed to reach the final, with Rose Hallett winning the trophy for the branch team with almost the last throw of the game. After the final, the Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane, Cllr Anne Court, presented medals to every team, and the winning trophy is currently on display in the Society’s Newbury branch.

Diane Long, Development Manager at the Society and organiser of the event, said: “We were really pleased to have 9 teams representing the Society and other local business companies, who took part in our charity netball tournament last week. There were mixed standards of experience, but this didn't deter any of them from maintaining a highly competitive stance throughout the match.

“This was a great opportunity for everyone involved to build new and existing relationships with other business partners, whilst also raising £345 for the Society's charity - the Pink Ribbon Foundation.

“We have already received great feedback from the teams that took part, and despite numerous injuries amongst the players, there have been many requests to hold the tournament again next year! Watch this space.”

Proceeds from the event went to the Society’s charity of the year, the Pink Ribbon Foundation (Charity Number 1080839). The Pink Ribbon Foundation’s mission is to fund projects and provide financial support to UK charities which relieve the needs of people who are suffering from, or who have been affected by breast cancer. They also work to advance the understanding of breast cancer, its early detection and treatment. So far the Society has managed to collect over £8,000 for the charity since their partnership began in 2012.
