Society shortlisted for prestigious award

BACA2016

Newbury Building Society is delighted to announce that its Didcot branch has been shortlisted to receive a prestigious Business & Community Award (BACA).

The BACAs is the brainchild of Didcot First, which has been working for the local community since 2006 with thousands of people benefitting from their activities. The awards recognise and reward excellence amongst local businesses, community groups and young enterprise. They are open to organisations, businesses, charity, community groups and young people, in and around the Didcot area.

The Society has been shortlisted in the Best Volunteering Practice category in the Business Sector. Sponsored by Soha Housing, the shortlisted nominees are Newbury Building Society, Sainsbury's in Didcot and the Science & Technology Facilities Council.

The Society’s Didcot branch has been involved in numerous community activities during 2016. It continues to take part in the popular Didcot Christmas Street Fair and supported Play2Give’s football tournament at Oxford City Football Club and the Wallingford Carnival, helping to raise money for local causes.

In branch, staff have sold tickets on behalf of the local firework display, Abingdon Air Show, Newbury Show and a Tudor Banquet (for the Didcot Christmas Street Fair). Charity boxes are positioned inside the branch to collect for Macmillan and Pink Ribbon Foundation (the Society’s charity of the year) and members of staff also encourage customers to buy a wristband on behalf of Play2Give, the Oxfordshire based fundraising organisation.

A magazine for Hagbourne Primary School, one of the branch’s Junior Newbury Building Society (JNBS) schools, has been printed for free on a number of occasions, and the local Scout groups’ Christmas post box is popular during the festive season. Representatives from the group collect and deliver in the local area for a small donation.

Sonja Roostan, Office Manager of the branch, said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for this award. The branch loves to attend and promote local events. Next year, as part of the Society’s new Charity of the Year scheme, we’ll be supporting Helen & Douglas House, whose mission is to enable young people with life-shortening conditions, to live as well and as fully as possible, and to support their needs and wishes.”

The biggest fundraiser in 2016 was when Aishling Breakspear from the Didcot branch abseiled down the side of the women's unit of John Radcliffe Hospital to raise money for The Children's Hospital's Fund for Children. She joined fellow colleagues and the brave foursome raised over £800 for the charity.

Newbury Building Society will be invited to attend a special BACA Gala Evening at Cornerstone in Didcot on Friday 18th November 2016. Look out for further updates on the awards by visiting www.newbury.co.uk or by following us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram using @NewburyBS.
