Newbury volunteers get stuck in at Five a Day Market Garden

Last week, a team of employees from Newbury Building Society rolled up their sleeves, donned their gardening gloves and spent a sunny day volunteering at local charity, Five a Day Market Garden.

Five a Day Market Garden (registered charity no.: 1202446) is a volunteer-led charity based on the Englefield Estate near Theale. They offer horticultural therapy in their two-acre garden to older people and provide outdoor education to local school children and groups like Brownies and Cub Scouts. Their mission is to use the garden to benefit the local community, whether that's through exercise, socialising, learning about the environment, or improving access to fresh, home-grown produce.

Volunteers made up of employees from our Marketing, Data, Treasury, and Facilities Teams, got to work on a variety of green-fingered tasks throughout the day. They weeded the fruit and vegetable beds, cleared the garden pond, propped up an apple tree damaged during bad weather, and fixed a wire fence to keep hungry rabbits away from the vegetables!

Luke McMahon, a Treasury Analyst working in our head office, commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed volunteering at Five a Day, it’s a wonderful space and I am happy the work we did made a noticeable difference. Five a Day is a fantastic charity that makes a difference in the community, so it was a pleasure to help – I hope to volunteer with them again!”

All Society employees get two paid days of volunteering leave each year to help organisations they are interested in or feel passionately about. Not only does this support local charities and community groups in need, but it also gives our people a great opportunity to experience new things, learn something different, and get to know colleagues from other teams.
