Society celebrates 160th birthday in style

Newbury Building Society celebrated its 160th birthday with a special evening for their business contacts at The Vineyard Hotel & Spa on Thursday 27 October 2016.

To celebrate Newbury Building Society’s 160th birthday, local business contacts were invited to a drinks reception at The Vineyard Hotel & Spa.

Over 90 guests attended the evening including local business partners and previous Executives and Board Members of the Society.  The Society’s Chief Executive, Roland Gardner, thanked guests for their support of the Society and spoke about the fantastic achievement reaching this milestone was for the Society, their staff and their members.

The Society, formed in Newbury in 1856, has been committed to helping local communities with their savings and to purchase homes ever since. Today, with over 65,000 members, the Society is stronger than ever with ten branches across Berkshire, Hampshire and Oxfordshire.

Roland Gardner, Chief Executive at the Society since February 2007, said: “There are less than 10 Building Societies who have already celebrated their 160th anniversary, a fact which makes our 160th anniversary all the more special and something for us to feel really proud about.

“We have not reached this milestone by chance, as throughout our history our management has made the sort of prudent decisions which mean we have always provided a safe place for savings and a reliable source of mortgage funding for local people to buy their homes.

“Our last three trading years in particular have been distinctly successful, based on balance sheet growth and profitability well ahead of our market share. Newbury Building Society and its members can look forward with confidence to the next 160 years.”
