If you #DoOneThing this November, have a chat about money. Regardless of your financial situation or your money know-how, opening up to friends, family, or professionals about our finances can help us (and others) in all kinds of ways.
Talk Money Week, organised by the Money and Pensions Service, takes place in November each year. With half-term recently taking place and Christmas spending on the horizon, it's the perfect time to chat about money. Whether it's salaries, savings accounts, or spending habits - it all helps to make talking about money less taboo.
Do One Thing
This year's theme is #DoOneThing - the idea is that you complete just one thing that will improve your financial wellbeing and inspire the people around you to do the same.
It doesn't matter whether it's something small, like creating a monthly budget, or something a bit bigger, like having a savings appointment to review your accounts at your bank or building society. It all adds up to being more aware, more confident, and less stressed.
You could also use Talk Money Week as a catalyst for talking to others about money - like your partner, children, or parents. You can find helpful resources on kickstarting conversations about money with different people on the MoneyHelper website.
The benefits of talking about money
According to Talk Money Week, a third of adults find thinking about their money situation worrying. Talking about money is the first step to addressing any concerns or uncertainties, helping us to feel more confident when making financial decisions or asking for help with any problems that might crop up in the future.
But that's not the only reason - discussing money with the people close to us is vitally important. Whether you have children, a joint account or mortgage, or ageing relatives who might need help managing financial affairs, being open, honest, and proactive can save time and stress.
